Past Events (Archived)

In the last 3 years or so St John's and Horwich Moor have put on many events. Here is some information about a few of them.

Valentine's Day Dinner 2009

On Valentine's night St John's were treated by the young people to a night of romantic entertainment. Smart well dressed young men welcomed us at the door and directed us downstairs for light drinks. We then made our way into church where there was subdued lighting and music by Emma singing and Ian playing his guitar. The tables were set out beautifully.

Alastair said grace and then we had a very tasty meal cooked by chef Danien and his wife Jane who worked very hard all day. During the meal we enjoyed background music of love songs played by Matthew and the meal was served by 13 young waiters and waitresses under the watchful eye of Alastair. All this took place under the expert tuition of Derek Horner who had worked hard all day at church and for many weeks planning and organising. A raffle took place and even the lovely table arrangements (supplied by Pat) were raffled. Many thanks go to all the young people, Derek, the cooks, the musicians and all the helpers (not forgetting Carol and Sheila in the kitchen) for a wonderful evening.

The Weakest Link

On Saturday 15 November 2008 St John's held its own version of The Weakest Link. Many thanks to everyone for all their hard work in making the evening such a fun time.

MUSICAL EVENING

Saturday night was 'Music Night' on 6th September 2008 at St John's Church, Horwich. Graham Smith, Paul Curtis, Matthew Howard-Norman and eleven year old Ben Scrivener gave an very enjoyable evening of music ranging from Lancashire folk songs to music from the musicals and great composers. Graham started the evening in fine style with his own brand of Lancashire humour and musical talent including singing and playing the guitar.

Young Ben surprised us all with his excellent performance on the euphonium. He played with confidence for his early years and selected a programme to please everyone.

Matthew was an excellent teenage ambassador giving a very moving rendition of 'This is the moment' from Jeckyll and Hyde accompanied by June Howard-Norman on the piano and then changed tempo playing Scott Joplin's 'Entertainer' on the piano. Matthew closed his programme accompanying himself on the piano as he sang 'Can you feel the love tonight' by Elton John.

Paul gave an impressive performance on flute playing a medley of well loved music including pieces by George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart and John Williams.

The evening concluded with Paul and Graham playing several numbers together, with 'Now is the hour' as their finale. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed and we hope that we will 'meet again' in 2009 with another 'Saturday Night is Music Night'.

St John's really has got Talent!

WebSite-in-a-Weekend Course

12th - 13th January 2008's course to create a church website in a weekend was a roaring success as you see!

Ably led by Mike Bossingham of the Family Friendly Churches Trust we learned how to create and edit web pages and structure a church website from scratch. This will now be an easy way to keep up with what's happening in our two churches and the many events that are going on.

St John's Youth Dinner

The older teenagers at St John's have in the year 2007 put on two of these dinners on both accounts for charity. Both have been a resounding success and have been enjoyed both by the people who ate at them and by the young people who were waiting on and providing entertainment.
Youth trip to France
In the summer of 2007 a group of 10 members of St John's went on a week long trip to Nime in the South of France, they visited many places including Avignon and the Pont du Gard.

They came back with many stories and in the case of a few of them very interesting nicknames or a new friend (Cheryl the scorpion for example)

The purpose of the trip was to follow up on the confirmation of the young people the previous year.

Horwich to Crowborough Bike Ride

At easter in 2005 the minister of St John's and his two sons cycled from Horwich to its twin town Crowborough the journey took a week, a day longer than expected due to the bikes being stolen in London.

Luckily they were able to get some new bikes and eventually a day later than planned they reached their goal.
