"All Things Bright and Beautiful"

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So how can you show the beauty of God's world in a photograph? Try your hand and enter St John's church Photography Competition 2010. Submit photographs which illustrate the theme "All Things Bright and Beautiful". anyone with any connection with the Church can enter, whatever your age. There will be prizes in two categories - for photographers under 16 years of age and for older entrants. Each picture entered will cost £2 for adults or £1 for young people as a contribution to Church funds. You can submit as many pictures as you like. The closing date is Monday 31 August 2010 so there is plenty of time over the summer to get out and about with your camera. All the entered photographs will be displayed in St John's Church for two weeks during which time people can vote for their favourite adult's and their favourite young person's picture to win the "popular vote" prizes. Then the pictures will be independently judged and prizes awarded. There will be an Exhibition event on Saturday, 25 September.

decipher the clues and bring back the 'treasure'

STANDING ROOM ONLY!

That was almost the case on Saturday, 17 April when the Supper Concert with Opera 74 (organised by Helen Stuart) took place. Apparently tickets were being sought after right up to the last moment. And no wonder - what an excellent event it was.

The proceedings began with a rousing chorus from Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, then a well-planned programme with something for everyone followed. We were treated to Viennese operetta, excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan (those brought back memories to many of us), a violin solo by Dvorak played by the conductor and the audience were particularly moved by "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables, a very appropriate choice in view of the present situation in Afghanistan. The conductor, splendid soloists, chorus and accompanist were very well received and applauded by the members and friends of St John's. The concert ended with a chorus from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, which will be their next production. Then came the Supper part of the proceedings and a really nice meal was served by the 'waiters and waitresses', the young people of the Church, dressed appropriately. The evening ended with a mint, a cup of tea or coffe and a raffle. In total over £800 was raised for Church Funds.
