St John's Lunch and Leisure Club

The St John's Lunch and Leisure Club was set up in April 1998 and is run totally by volunteers. Although independent, Age Concern offers guidance to ensure the club is being run within a safe environment.

The purpose of the club is to provide a hot meal and activities for the elderly. It provides relief from loneliness and offers opportinities for friendship and support to members some of whom would otherwise never leave their homes. Local transport can be arranged, if needed, by 'Ring and Ride'.

The Club meets weekly on a Thursday, at noon, and after a meal some stay for a game of Bingo. Occasionally, speakers are invited to offer information and guidance to our members. On the first Thursday of the month there is a 'Songs of Praise' in the church which members can attend, if they wish, following their meal.

Throughout the year we arrange outings which are paid for by the members themselves but we try to raise enough funds to subsidise these trips.Past visits have been to various locations like: Llandudno, Oswaldtwistle and Bardon Mills, Downham, Morecambe and the Opera House in Manchester. More recently we went to see 'The Calendar Girls' at the Lowry Theatre. [Luncheon Club Activities]

The Luncheon Club has a properly consituted committee with a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. There is an AGM each March and two other meetings during the year.

Initially we started with 24 members but can now cater for 40. Although our luncheon club is usually fully subscribed we will always take details of anyone wishing to join us and membership is open to any senior member of the community irrespective of their religion or creed.

If you would like to be added to this list please contact our Treasurer: Mrs Maureen Marsden on 01204 469836

Q: What do you like most about luncheon club?

A: "Jolly good hot meal is always nicely presented and served by the staff who are willing to give you what you want either a smaller portion or leave something off, you are never made to feel a nuisance."

Q: What do you get most out of attending the luncheon club?

A: "I only get out one day a week now and that is to the Lucheon Club. Having transport from home to the club, a hot meal and company means so much to me, the opportunity to meet other people, fellowship, various outings. On a Monday I look forward to Thursday, it keeps me going. It may not seem very important to you but what the volunteers do for us; we can not thank you enough."

Q: Tell me the best thing about an event you have experienced with the Luncheon Club?

A: "All the trips out are very good but the best trip was the one in November 2007 when we were taken out for the day and had the opportunity to go shoppingwhich enabled me to get Christmas presents. It is very difficult to go shoppong now and if I need help with walking or a wheel chair then the volunteers sort that out for me. We also have a hot meal on this trip with a coach ride as well."

Q: What's the best thing about the organiser of the Luncheon club.

A: "People in charge are pleasant, helpful and patient. They will come and chat to you. It means so much for somebody to have time to chat. If there is a problem they quietly sort it out; like when I wasn't well they just took me home without a fuss. It's smashing' I have nothing but good things to say about the club."
